Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level names remained running.
